Agency History

Ebow The Digital Agency was founded in 1999 by MD David Douglas. David was in college at the time and started the business ‘for pretend’ in his bedroom in order to keep busy.

25 years later and Ebow is one of Irelands most respected independent digital agencies with clients around the globe.

Ebow is founded 1/2

Whilst studying Computer Science in Trinity College, Ebow was founded by David Douglas. The agency is named after the R.E.M. song E-bow the Letter from the album New Adventures in Hi-Fi.

The Basement of 60 Pembroke Street Lower 2/2

Once the company broke out of the bedroom in Dave’s 1 bed in Dun Laoghaire, it found it’s new home in the cold, barred and in need of renovation basement of 60 Pembroke Street Lower (since renovated).

We loved every minute of it. We made a desk from a large piece of plywood and some 2×4 as legs. Dublin based artist, Morgan, a mate of ours and one time employee painted a big mural on it and we named her Betty.

Douglas Newman Good Website Design 1/3

The first client Ebow ever worked on was Douglas Newman Good Commercial. The site was built in Macromedia Flash. The most ground breaking technology at the time that is sadly no more.

Technology Puts a Feather in a|wears cap 2/3

a|wear was an Irish chain of women’s clothing stores.The brand also operated internationally through its online store at awear.com.

a|wear were one of our first, and most glamorous clients and we did some amazing work together as digital started to upend the fashion world and hoe consumers bought clothes.

Our first major pitch win 3/3

In 2000 it was very clear that the travel industry was going to change beyond recognition due to the internet.

Ebow won a pitch to help Budget revolutionise their business by moving 30% of booking to be through their website.

We received a phone call and were invited to pitch. We won and we changed the business forever.

We asked why they asked us to pitch and they said someone had recommended us. We never found out who that was, but would love to thank them. To win a household name, and a business as strong as Budget’s was a game-changer for our 3 man agency that we’d presented as…well, a little bigger…

Not in the newspapers anyway! 1/4

Our ad campaign got some nice coverage in the newspapers at the time. This was a big deal for us as it was ling before the launch of social media so to get ‘into the papers’ was nationwide coverage.

Dublin's Original Creative Quarter 2/4

This was a big moment for us – having grown up in the 80s and 90s when Temple Bar was considered the creative hub of Dublin, for us to get an office there was a very exciting move. Granted it was only 2 rooms but hey, we were in our early 20s and there was lots and lots of fun to be had. It’s here where some of our most exciting developments took place and we really learned the ropes. Highs, lows and in-betweens.

Bringing Clarity to a Web of Technobabble 3/4

Our first advertising campaign was created by Bloom Advertising and ran across 48 sheets in prime Dublin spots and DART cards.

To say we were proud of ourselves is an understatement.

Our American intro... 4/4

Budget Travel introduced us to American Holidays as they were all part of the same group.

We created the first iteration of AmericanHolidays.com, Ireland’s most successful tour operator to the American market.
